v Ways to reduce the
effect of corona
It was
observed that severe corona effects were observed at an operating voltage of 33
kV or higher. Therefore, careful design of the pickling must be performed on
substations or bus rails rated for 33 kV and high voltage or else too late air
may cause flashing in the insulators or between stages, causing major damage to
the equipment.
Corona
effects can be reduced in the following ways:
·
By increasing the size of the conductor
By
increasing the conductor size, the voltage at which the corona occurs and the
corona's effects are greatly reduced. This is one of the reasons why ACSR
connectors that have a larger cross-sectional area are used on transmission
lines.
· By
increasing the conductor spacing.
By
increasing the spacing between the conductors, the voltage at which the corona
occurs which the corona's effects can be eliminated. However, the spacing
cannot be increased much or the cost of the support frame (for example, the
largest cross-arms and support) may increase considerably. [5]
·
use bundled conductors
The optimal
solution is to use the bundled conductors by making the pie through two or more
conductors and then short circuit on these connectors.
v Advantages
and disadvantages of the effect of corona
Corona's
effects on communication lines. Corona has many advantages and disadvantages.
In the correct design of the high pressure line, a balance must be struck
between advantages and disadvantages. Below are the pros and cons of Corona.
Advantages
· Due to the
formation of corona, the air surrounding the conductor becomes conductive and
thus the apparent diameter of the conductor increases.
· The increased
diameter reduces the electrostatic pressure between the conductors.
· Corona reduces
the effects of storm transients.
· Ozone industry.
· The gas sample
is ionized before being used in the mass spectrometer.
Disadvantages
· Corona
accompanies energy loss.
· This affects the
transmission efficiency of the line.
· Ozone is
produced by corona and may cause conductive corrosion due to chemical action.
· The current
drawn by the line due to the corona is not sinusoidal and thus non-sinusoidal
voltage drop occurs in the line.
· This may cause
inductive interference with adjacent communication lines.
